Cardboard Citizens, the UK's only professional homeless people's theatre company, is running an exciting and extensive program of performing arts workshops at Crisis Skylight. The workshops are open to anyone over 18 with experience of homelessness and are led by professional and acclaimed directors, performance artists and workshop leaders. Aiming to build confidence and self-esteem through creative expression, this program offers the unique opportunity to participants to explore and develop their skills through seven different performance art forms; contemporary dance, slam poetry, theatre improvisation, singing, drama therapy, acting for theatre and music making.
Theatre workshops are led by Cardboard Citizens' own pivotal creative team, comprising a blend of theatre expertise and outreach experience to produce some of the UKs most exciting contemporary theatre. The Contemporary Dance workshops are held in collaboration with The Place, the UK's premier centre for contemporary dance; uniting training, creation and performance. Music Making workshops include singing, vocal training and music making, led by talented and intuitive teachers. Drawing on a diverse range of techniques including visualization and kinaesthetic activities, training and musical improvisation serves as a powerful vehicle for listening and connection, in addition to raising individuals' expectations of what they can achieve and producing some fantastic sounds!
Slam Poetry combines writing with drama, presentation and speaking, evolving the art of poetry into an accessible, fun and (sometimes) competitive form. Slam poetry is not only a fast paced and dynamic creative expression, but can be used as a significant tool to develop valuable communication techniques, essential in all areas of life.
Each workshop is led with an original and innovative approach and participants will have the chance to demonstrate and share their creative talents, with the programme culminating in Skylighter, an exciting end-of-term show that will showcase performances from each workshop.
