Streetlink - a new way to help rough sleepers

12 December 2012 by Petia

This time of year is one of the most challenging for homeless people and those sleeping rough in particular. We know that many people want to help rough sleepers but don’t know the best way to do this.

That’s why we are pleased to support the launch of StreetLink, a new telephone line 0300 500 0914 and website www.streetlink.org.uk which will help link someone sleeping on the street with local advice and services. This excellent service has been developed by Broadway and Homeless Link and allows concerned members of the public to connect rough sleepers with local advice and services they may not be aware of.

Please take the first step to help rough sleepers by saving the StreetLink number to your phone and next time you see someone rough sleeping, call or visit www.streetlink.org.uk.

Goodbye Hanbury Street: the packing diary

25 October 2012 by Petia

The skip is full, the final crates are being packed away, the walls are bare and our muscles are aching appropriately. Moving day is finally upon us.

We thought we'd share a snapshot of our packing week including some of the random 'gems' we found in our archives as we were clearing up. The winner hands down is a stylish monochrome cow suit number modelled aptly by Stuart.

See you on the other side.

We're Moving House!

23 October 2012 by Petia

After nine years of working from our bohemian nest at 26 Hanbury St, Cardboard Citizens is just about to take a huge bold step forward.

On Friday the movers are coming to load our packing crates, the coffee mugs, filing cabinets, the costume cupboard, the samba drums, stacks of all our play scripts, awards and photographs, our staff, and possibly Treacle, the office cat.

They are being taken on a 5-minute drive down the road past Aldgate East station, through the little streets behind the East London Mosque, and round the corner from the renowned Pakistani restaurant Tayyabs.

On October 29th we relocate to our brand new premises at: 77A Greenfield Road, Whitechapel, E1 1EJ (Here’s a map).

Click here to read all about our new space and how it will affect the work of the Company.

Here are some work-in-progress images below.

Kate Winslet visits ACT NOW & our new home

22 October 2012 by Petia

Company Ambassador Kate Winslet visited Cardboard Citizens’ new premises at 77A Greenfield Road, Whitechapel prior to our move this weekend. She delighted Members of Cardboard Citizens' ACT NOW programme by attending our Monday night drama workshop at the Brady Arts Centre.

We're honoured to have the academy award-winning actress as our Ambassador since 2008. Kate hosted the Company’s biennial fundraising dinner in 2011 helping raise £130,000 which has enabled us to secure our new space in Whitechapel and is excited to continue her involvement with Cardboard Citizens. We're pleased to confirm that she will be hosting our next gala fundraising dinner in Spring 2013.

After nine years based in an attic off Brick Lane, Cardboard Citizens will have a home that hosts all of the Company’s work under one roof. The new offices behind the East London Mosque include a large rehearsal space, offices and confidential room for Information, Advice & Guidance with  Members of the company.
