Timon of Athens
19 October - 12 November 2006Created for the RSC Complete Works Festival.
Adapted by Sarah Woods and Adrian Jackson, this production is set in an environment resembling a management seminar. ‘Goals’, ‘personal development’ and ‘transformation’ are paramount, and Shakespeare’s text is used as a tool to motivate business people. The audience are received as participants to a training seminar where a pared-down version of Shakespeare’s text is interwoven with contemporary testimony.
Timon of Athens tells a story that has been repeated throughout civilisation: of a wealthy man surrounded by flatterers and yes-men, whose ‘dream of friendship’ turns to lonely nightmare when his debts overwhelm him.
Who can speak broader than he that has no house to put his head in?
Such may rant against great buildings… (Act III, sc IV)
"Jackson’s success lies in getting to the despairing heart of Shakespeare's play."
