Down/Out

1 July 2007

Down/Out reacted to the netherworld of tramping and poverty evoked in George Orwell’s Down and Out in Paris and London and Jack London’s People of the Abyss. Video clips and projected photographs further explored themes of exploitation and artistic voyeurism.

This ensemble production featured 25 homeless and former homeless participants from Cardboard Citizens’ performing arts workshops. A live soundtrack was provided by the company’s New Music Ensemble, led by Reynaldo Young.

“Powerful stuff… The authenticity of peoples’ experiences came over very well.” Audience Member.

“    This is one of the best productions of Buchner’s classic un-finished play I have ever seen....company and play are so perfectly matched.”
