We are proud to announce that critically acclaimed theatre director Matthew Xia has joined our Board of Trustees.

He has also served on the Boards of Creative Futures, Rich Mix and Theatre Royal Stratford East.

Commenting on the appointment, Matthew stated: “I’m thrilled to be invited to join the board of Cardboard Citizens, an organisation I first worked with about 17 years ago on a project in South London.

“Cardboard Citizens is a theatre company I hold incredibly dear to my heart – it allies completely with my principles regarding theatre for social change. The benefits to the individuals the company engages and wider society are clear.

“I look forward to supporting the Board, the Chair and the Artistic Director as Cardboard Citizens continues to go from strength to strength in its practice of changing minds and transforming lives.”

A well respected voice and theatremaker in the theatre industry, Matthew brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the company. His directing credits include Frankenstein, Wish List, Into The Woods and Brink at the Royal Exchange, alongside shows including Blue/Orange, The Sound Of Yellow and Sizwe Banzi Is Dead (Young Vic & Eclipse), Suckerpunch Boom Suite (Barbican & NitroBeat), and Migration Music and Scrappers at the Liverpool Everyman and Playhouse.

Welcoming Matthew to the Cardboard Citizens’ company, Prue Skene CBE, Chair of the Cardboard Citizens Board, said: “We’re incredibly pleased to have Matthew joining our board as a trustee, at an ambitious time for the organisation. We’ve known Matthew for some years and have been excited to watch him develop as a hugely talented and well-respected artistic director over that time, creating work that very much chimes with our mission.

“Matthew will no doubt bring purpose and passion for the theatre we make, and will be a huge asset to the Board and to the wider organisation.” Prue Skene, CBE.
